A contact sport similar to the English game
of rugby. First match under Harvard rules was
between Harvard University and McGill
University, Montreal, Canada, in 1874. The
pitch is marked out with a series of parallel
lines giving a gridiron effect, hence the
sport's other name, `gridiron football'.
Played with an oval ball like rugby, it also
uses rugby-style goalposts. Players are well
padded for protection and wear protective
helmets. A team consists of more than 40
players but only 11 are allowed on the field
at any one time. Games are divided into four
quarters of 15 minutes each. Super Bowl first
held in 1967 is now an annual meeting between
the winners of the National and American
